Renowned Wildlife Photographer Chungba Sherpa Passes Away at 64

Kathmandu: Renowned wildlife photographer Chungba Sherpa passed away on Monday at the age of 64. He breathed his last at 12:15 AM while undergoing treatment at Kathmandu's Grande Hospital.



A resident of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu, Sherpa had been battling liver-related issues for a week and was on ventilator life support, as confirmed by ward chair Phunuru Sherpa.


Sherpa is survived by his two sons and three daughters. A devoted member of the Nepali Congress, he served as the president of the party's Khumbu Pasanglhamu chapter and had contested for the rural municipality chair in two previous local elections.


In addition to his political engagement, Sherpa was a prominent tourism entrepreneur and had also served as the chair of the then Chaurikharka Village Development Committee.


In recent years, Sherpa made his mark as a wildlife photographer, gaining recognition both nationally and internationally. His photographic work took him from the remote village of Chaurikharka to the wild landscapes of Tanzania in East Africa. His images, featured in newspapers, journals, calendars, and books, have showcased the stunning beauty of Nepal’s natural world, reaching audiences in countries such as Hong Kong, India, Switzerland, and beyond.
