As Milo Ventimiglia and his wife, Jarah Mariano, prepare to welcome their first child, the couple faces a heartbreaking loss—the destruction of their Malibu home in the Los Angeles wildfires.
The Emmy-nominated actor, best known for his role in This Is Us, shared the devastating news in an interview with CBS News on Thursday. During the interview, Ventimiglia revisited the charred remains of his neighborhood alongside CBS host Tony Dokoupil, an emotional journey that left the actor visibly moved.
"You start thinking about all the memories tied to different parts of the house," Ventimiglia said, his voice filled with emotion. "And then you see your neighbors’ homes and everything around you, and your heart just breaks."
The couple evacuated their home on Tuesday and could only watch in helpless anguish as security cameras captured the fire consuming their property. "At a certain point, we just turned it off," Ventimiglia admitted. "We kind of accepted the loss."
Meanwhile, firefighters continue to combat the deadly wildfires that erupted across Los Angeles earlier this week. According to Cal Fire, at least six fires remain active, scorching over 40 square miles of the region and devastating an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 homes, businesses, and other structures. The Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire are among the largest, with no containment reported.
In a poignant twist of fate, Ventimiglia acknowledged the eerie parallel between his personal loss and the storyline of his This Is Us character, Jack Pearson, who tragically died from smoke inhalation after a house fire. "It’s not lost on me—life imitating art," Ventimiglia reflected.
Hollywood has also felt the wildfire’s wrath, with stars like Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, and Tina Knowles among those displaced by the inferno.
Despite the tragedy, Ventimiglia remains optimistic as he looks toward the future. Mariano, who is nine months pregnant, is due to give birth any day.
"We’ve got good friends, we’ve got good people we’re working with, and we’ll make do," Ventimiglia said. "Wife, baby, and dog—that’s what’s most important."
