Tragic Air Ambulance Crash in Northeast Philadelphia: Child Among Six on Board



PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A medical transport plane carrying a young patient, her mother, and four crew members crashed in a fiery accident near Roosevelt Mall in Northeast Philadelphia on Friday evening.

Details of the Crash

Authorities reported that the Learjet 55 went down around 6:30 p.m. shortly after taking off from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The aircraft was headed to Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri when the tragic incident occurred.

Patient and Crew on Board

Shriners Children's Hospital confirmed that the pediatric patient had been receiving medical care in Philadelphia and was being transported back to Mexico with her mother.

"Our deepest condolences go out to the families of the medical crew and pilots who lost their lives in this devastating event. Our thoughts are also with those affected on the ground, and we are grateful for the swift response of first responders," the hospital said in a statement.

Jet Rescue Air Ambulance, the company operating the flight, stated that four crew members were also on board.

“At this moment, we are unable to confirm any survivors,” the company said. “Names of the victims will not be released until their families have been notified. Our primary concern is for the patient’s family, our personnel, and those impacted by this tragedy.”

Eyewitness Accounts and Emergency Response

Witnesses described a horrific scene as the plane struck a building, causing a massive explosion.

“It was just terrible. I was driving towards Wendy’s when I saw the plane hit the building and burst into flames. The sky lit up—it felt like an earthquake,” one witness recounted.

A large fire erupted following the crash, engulfing vehicles and property in the vicinity. Emergency responders quickly arrived to contain the blaze and assist those affected.

Official Response and Safety Advisory

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker addressed the media at a press conference around 8:30 p.m., stating that officials were still working to determine the number of casualties.

“We are asking for prayers at this time,” Mayor Parker said.

The Philadelphia Fire Department advised residents to stay away from the crash site near Calvert and St. Vincent streets. Mayor Parker also urged locals not to handle any debris and to report findings to emergency services.

A temporary shelter has been set up for displaced residents at Samuel Fels High School on Langdon Street.
